Origin
Common Anemarrhena Rhizome is the dried rhizome of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bge. (Fam. Liliaceae).
Nature and Affinity
The drug is bitter and sweet to taste, in nature, and distributed to the Lung, Stomach and Kidney Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
  Slat-shaped, slightly curved, somewhat compressed, branched occasionally, 3~15 cm long, 0.8~1.5 cm in diameter. One end exhibiting pale yellowish stem and leaf scars. Externally yellowish-brown to brown, the upper surface exhibiting a concave groove and closely arranged annular nodes with dense yellowish-brown remains of leaf based growing upward bilaterally; the lower surface raised and somewhat shriveled, exhibiting depressions or protruding dotted root scars. Texture hard, easily broken, fracture yellowish-white, Odour slight; taste, slightly sweetish, bitterish and viscous on chewing.

INDICATIONS
 

Febrile diseases with high fever and dire thirst; heat in the lung with dry cough; consumptive fever; diabetes due to internal heat; constipation.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1.Clearing away intense heat to purge fire

For treating seasonal febrile disease due to invasion of Qi system by evils, marked by high fever, fidgets and thirst, it is often combined with Gypsum Fibrosum; for cough due to lung-heat or unproductive cough or cough with expectoration of scanty sputum due to deficiency of lung-Yin, it is often with Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae.

2.Nourishing vital essence to relieve dryness

For treating hectic fever, nocturnal emmision, night sweating, etc., due to deficiency of Yin and flare-up of fire, it is often combined with Cortex Phellodendri, Radix Rehmanniae, etc.; for sore throat or aphtha due to the same cause, with Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Scrophulariae.

3.Promoting the production of body fluid and arresting thirst

The drug can be used to treat thirst due to stomach-heat,or diabetes in combination with Radix Trichosanthis, Radix Ophipogonis, Radix Puerariae, etc.
