Spheroidal
or slightly flattened-pentagon spheroidal, 2-5 mm in diameter.
Externally dark yellowish-green to brown, rough, with numerous
spotted protrudings or depressed oil dots. A pentagon-stellate
cleft present at the apex and a yellow-tomentose fruit stalk
at the base. Texture hard and fragile. Transverse section
showing 5 locular ovary, each locule possessing 1-2 yellowish
seeds. Odour, strong aromatic; taste, pungent and bitter.

Dispelling cold and arresting diarrhea
In treating
frequent attacks of coldness and pain of the head which lasts
a long time accompanied by salivation, the drug is often used
with radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens,
etc., in treating painful hernia due to cold, 6g of the drug,
6g of Fructus Foeniculi, 9g of Fructus Meliae Toosendan and
3g of Radix Aucklandiae can be decocted and taken; in treating
abdominal; pain, vexation and mental confusion due to ascending
of cold-dampness of beriberi, the drug can be used with Fructus
Chaenomelis, Semen Arecae and Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens.
2. Sending
down Qi to arrest vomitting
In treating
cold syndrome of deficiency type of the stomach manifested
by vomitting after meals abdominal pain or retching with salivation,
the drug is often used with Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, and
Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens; in treating acid regurgitation
after meals and coldness and pain of the chest and abdomen,
the drug can be ground into powder with an equal amount of
baked ginger; in treating hypochondriac pain, acid regurgitation,
vomitting, etc. due to attack of liver-fire on the stomach,
the drug is often made into pills with Rhizoma Coptidis.
Besides,
the drug powder can be mixed with vinegar and applied to the
sole to induce fire to go down. This method can be used treat
sores of the mouth and lip.
