Origin
Hard, globular excretions on the leaves and stems induced by the larva deposited there by the aphid insect Melaphis chinensis
Distribution
It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaaxi, Guangxi provinces.
Nature and Affinity
This drug is sour and astringent and cold in nature, and is distributed to the Lung, Large Intestine and Kidney Channels.

ACTIONS AND INDICATIONS
  1. Astringing the lung and purging fire

In treating long-lasting cough due to deficiency of the lung, the drug is often used in combination with drugs fro astringing the lung, such as Fructus Schisandrae, Pericarpium Papaveris, etc.

2. Astringing the intestine to arrest diarrhea

In treating long-lasting diarrhea or dysentery, prolapse of rectum, etc., the drug alone can be used , or used in combination with Fructus Chebulae, Fructus Schisandrae, etc.

3. Controlling seminal emission and reducing urination

In treating seminal emission and enuresis, the drug can be used in combination wit Poria.

4. Arresting sweating and promoting production of body fluid

In treating night sweating, the drug powder mixed with water can be applied to the umbilicus, covered with gauze, and the drug is to be applied at night and removed the next morning. In treating diabetes, the drug alone can be taken.

5. Inducing astringency to arrest bleeding

In treating metrorrhagia, metrostaxis, hemafecia, etc., the drug is often used in combination with drugs for arresting bleeding such as Fructus Mume, Folium Artemisiae Argyi, etc.

Besides, the drug powder applied to the local area or the drug decoction used to fumigate and wash the local area, is effective for sores, tinea, pyogenic infection, ulceration of the skin, prolapse of rectum, hysteroptosis, etc.

ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
  Usually, 3-6g of the drug is used in decoction. The drug is often make into pills or powder. Proper amount of the drug is used in external treatment.
