Origin
Oyster Shell is the shell of Ostrea gigas Thunberg, Ostrea talienwhanensis Crosse or Ostrea rivularis Gould (Fam. Osteridae).
Nature and Affinity
This drug is salty in taste and slightly cold in nature, and is distributed to the Liver, Gall Bladder and Kidney Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
  Shell of Ostrea gigas In elongated pieces, dorsal and ventral edges almost parallel, 10~50 cm long, 4~15 cm high. The right shell relatively small, scales strong and thick, arranged in laminated or laminating striated order. The outer surface smooth or with several depressions. Pale purple, grayish-white or yellowish-brown; the inner surface porcelain white, without denticles at both sides of the umbo. The left shell with deep depression, scales bigger and more rough than those of the right shell, attachment surface of the umbo small. Texture hard, fracture laminated, white. Odourless; taste, slightly salty.

Shell of Ostrea talienwhanensis Subtriangular, dorsal and ventral edges V-shaped. The outer surface of the right shell pale yellow, with loose concentric scales undulating up and down; the inner surface white. The concentric scales of the left shell strong and thick, with several distinct ribs radiated from the umbo, the inner surface concaved in shape of a box; hinge surface small.

Shell of Ostrea rivularis Rounded, oval or triangular. The outer surface of the right shell slightly uneven, grey, purple, brown, yellow, ect; concentric scales in a ring, thin and fragile in the young and overlapped one another several years later. The inner surface white, sometimes the edge pale purple.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1.Calming the liver and suppressing Yang hyperactivity

In treating headache, dizziness, tinnitus, numbness of the limbs, etc. due to deficiency of Yin and hyperactivity of Yang, the drug is often used in combination with Os Draconis, Ochra, Plastrum Testudinis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, etc.

In treating afternoon fever, night sweating and spontaneous sweating seen in tuberculosis, 30g of the drug can be decocted and taken orally. In treating seminal emission and spermatorrhea, the drug can be used in combination with Stamen Nelumbinis, Semen Euryales, etc. In treating metrorrhagia, metrostaxis and leukorrhea, the drug can be used in combination with Colla Corii Asini, Halloysitum Rubrum, Radix Dipsaci, etc.

4.Softening and resolving hard Dipsaci, etc.

In treating scrofula, subcutaneous, etc. due to accumulation of phlegm-fire, the drug is often used in combination with Radix Scrophulariae, Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii, etc. Besides, the drug has in recent years been used to relieve hyperacidity and is effective in treating acid regurgitation seen in gastropathy.
