ACTIONS AND INDICATIONS
 

1. Clearing away heat by inducing loosing bowels

To treat stagnation of undigested food due to accumulation of heat, and constipation due to dryness of the intestine, it can be combined with Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, or it may be used singly after being infused in hot water or mixed with honey in pills.

2. Promoting the discharge of water to relieve ascites

To treat ascites with fullness and distention it is more safe than Radix Euphorviae Kansui and is often used with Semen Pharbitidis, Pericarpium Arecae or used singly in boilling water as a drink.

ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
  1-2 g of the drug are used for inducing loosing cowels and 3-6 g of the drug are for drastic diarrhea; it is otten added later for being decocted with others, or infused in hot water as a drink. Its effect is mild if it is usd in the form of pills.

REMARKS
  Doses over 5g may cause unpleasant symptoms of nausea, vomitting and stomachache.
