Origin
The drug consists of the red coloured iron ore Hematite. The crude drug is broken into pieces for use, or calcined, treated with vinegar and then broken into pieces for medication.
Distribution
It is mainly produced in Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Hunan, and Sichuan.
Nature and Affinity
This drug is bitter in taste, cold in nature, and is distributed to the Liver and Heart Channels.

ACTIONS AND INDICATIONS
 

1.Calming the liver and purging away heat

In treating headache and dizziness due to hyperactivity of the liver-Yang, the drug can be used in combination with Concha Haliotidis, Spica Prunellae, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae, etc.

2.Relieving vomitting and sending down adverse flow of Qi

In treating vomitting, belching, fullness sensation in the chest and abdomen, salivation, etc. due to adverse ascending of Qi, the drug is often used in combination with Flos Inulae, Rhizoma Pinelliae, etc. In treating vomitting and hiccup due to ascending of the liver-fire, the drug can be used in combination with Indigo Naturalis, Radix Gentianae, Fructus Evodiae, etc.

3.Cooling blood to arrest bleeding

In treating hematemesis and epistaxis due to blood-heat, the drug can be used in combination with Radix Paeoniae Alba, Caulis Bambusae in Teaniam, the calcined drug is ground into powder and 10g of the powder is taken as dose, 3 times a day. The powder can also be applied to the local area to treat bleeding due to trauma.

  Usually, 10-30g of the drug is used in decoction. The crude drug is usually used to calm the liver, relieve vomiting and cool blood and the calcined drug, to astringe blood to arrest bleeding.
