Origin
Cicada Slough is the slough of Cryptotympana pustulata Fabricius (Fam. Cicadidae) dropped off the nymph during emergence.

It is sweet to the taste, cold in nature, and is distributed to the Lung and Liver Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
 

Slightly ellipsoidal and curved, about 3.5cm long, 2cm wide. The outer surface yellowish-brown, translucent, lustrous. The head with a pair of filiform antennae, usually dropped, compound eyes projected. The anterior end of the frons projected, mouth and snout developed, labrum short and wide, labium extended into a tube. The dorsal surface of the thorax with a cross split of inward curved margin. Each side of the dorsum bears two small wings. The ventral surface bears three pairs of legs, covered with yellowish-brown minute hairs. The abdomen obtuse rounded, 9 segments. Light, hollowed, fragile. Odourless; taste, slight.

INDICATIONS
 

Upper respiratory infection with sore throat, hoarseness of voice; measles with inadequate eruption; urticaria with itching; inflammation of the eye with formation of corneal opacity; convulsion, tetanus.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1. Dispersing wind-heat from the superficies

For treating cold due to wind-heat or seasonal febrile disease at the beginning stage and accompanied by the exterior syndrome, it is often combined with Herba Menthae, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Gypsum Fibrosum, etc. for treating sore throat accompanied with hoarse voice due to wind-heat, it can be used as a single medicine or may be combined with Semen Sterculiae Scaphigerae; or nocturnal crying with restlessness, etc. with Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis, Medulla Funci, Herba Menthae, etc.

2. Promoting eruption and relieving itching

At the beginning stage of measles with retardation of eruption, it may be with Radix Puerariae, Fructus Arctii, Herba Menthae, Fructus Forsythiae.

3. Resolving nebula and brightening the eyes

For treating blood-shot eyes due to wind-heat, or nebula with poor vision, it is often combined with Flos Chrysanthemi, Flos Eriocauli, etc.

4. Dispelling evil wind and relieving pain

For treating tetanus marked by lockjaw, opisthotonus, it is often combined with Rhizoma Gastrodiae, Scorpic and other drug for dispelling wind and relieving convulsion; for treating infantile convulsion with fever, with Ramulus Uncariae aum Uncis, Radix Scutellariae, Cornu Antelopis, etc.
