Villous Amomum Fruit is the dried ripe fruit of Amomum Villosum Lour., Amomum Vilosum Lour. var. xanthioides T. L. Wu et Senjen or Amomum Longiligulare T. L. Wu (Fam. Zingiberaceae).
Nature and Affinity
It is pungent in taste and warm in nature. Its therapeutic action is related to the Channels of the Spleen, Stomach and Kidney.

herb DESCRIPTION
 

Fruit of Amomum villosum and Amomum villosum var. xanthioides

Ellipsoidal or ovoid, indistinctly 3-ridged, 1.5-2 cm long, 1-1.5 cm in diameter. Externally brown, densely covered with spiny protrudings, apex with remains of perianth, and base often bearing a fruit stalk. Pericarp thin and soft. Seeds agglutinated into a mass, 3-ridged obtusely, divided into 3 groups by white septa, and each group containing 5-26 seeds. Seeds irregularly polyhedral, 2-3 mm in diameter; externally brownish-red or dark brown, finely wrinkled, covered with pale brown membranous aril; texture hard, endosperm grayish-white. Odour, strongly aromatic; taste, pungent, cool and slightly bitter.

Fruit of Amomum longiligulare

Long ellipsoidal or ovoid, distinctly 3-ridged distinctly, 1.5-2 cm long, 0.8-1.2 cm in diameter. Externally with flaky and brached soft spines, base showing a scar of fruit stalk. Pericarp thickened and hard. Masses of seeds relatively small, each group containing 3-24 seeds, 1.5-2 mm in diameter. Odour and taste slightly weak.

INDICATIONS
 

Accumulation of damp in the spleen and the stomach marked by epigastric stuffieness and anorexia; vomiting and diarrhea due to deficiency-cold the spleen and the stomach; pernicious vomiting of pregnancy; threatened abortion.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1. Promoting circulation of qi to allay pain.

It is effective for syndromes such as retention of dampness in the middle-jiao and stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach marked by abdominal pain and distention.

2. Warming the stomach to stop vomitting.

It is used for syndromes such as insufficiency of the spleen-yang, manifested as chest stuffiness and vomiting or pernicious vomiting.

3. Warming the spleen to stop diarrhea.

It is used for diarrhea syndrome due to insufficiency, coldness, dampness and stagnation of the spleen. The drug is effective for miscarriage prevention therewith.
