Morinda Root is the dried root of Morinda officinalis How (Fam. Rubiaceae).
Nature and Affinity
The drug is sweet tasteless to the taste, slightly cold in nature, and distributed to the Lung, Liver and Kidney Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
  Compressed-cylindrical, somewhat curved, varying in length, 0.5-2 cm in diameter. Externally greyish-yellow or dark grey, with longitudinal wrinkles and transverse cracks, some bark transversely broken and separated from wood. Texture tough, fracture bark thick, pruple or purplish, easily separated from wood. Wood hard, yellowish-brown or yellowish-white, 1-5 mm in diameter. Odourless; taste, sweetish and slightly astringent.

INDICATIONS
 

Impotence, seminal emission, infertility, menstrual disorders, pain and cold feeling in the lower abdomen; rheumatic arthralgia; limpness of the legs.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1.Reducing heat and removing poisonous substances.

It is often used in treating snake-bite, centipede-bites, bee-stings or scorpionism; to treat snake-bite, 120g of the fresh plant are pounded and its juice is mixed with rice wine or warm boiled water for oral administration, and after taking the medicine the patient should stay in bed with quilts covered to let out mild perspiration.


2.Promoting discharge of urine to eliminate edema.

It is used in treating edema or ascites or oliguria or with others having the function in promoting the discharge of urine. At present, it is often used in treating ascites due to schistosomiasis or due to hepatocirrhosis. To treat acute otitis media, its juice mixed being it is used in treating cancer in clinical pratice for medical researches.
