Origin
Lalang Grass Rhizoma is the dried rhizome of Imperata cylindrical Beauv. Var. major (Nees) C. E. Hubb. (Fam. Gramineae).
Nature and Affinity
It is sweet in taste and cold in nature, and is distributed to the Heart, Lung, Stomach and Urinary Bladder Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
  Long cylindrical, 30~60 cm long, 2~4 mm in diameter. Externally yellowish-white or yellowish, slightly lustrous, longitudinally wrinked, nodes distinct and slightly raised, internodes varying in lengths, usually 1.5~3 cm long. Texture, light, somewhat fragile, fracture white in bark, mostly with cracks arranged radially, stele yellowish, easily stripped from cortex. Odourness; taste, slightly sweetish.

INDICATIONS
 

Heamatemesis, epistaxis and hematuria due to heat in the blood; febrile diseases with thirst; jaundice; urinary infection with difficult painful urination; edema in acute nephritis.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1. Cooling blood and arresting bleeding

This drug can be used to treat bleeding due to blood-heat, such as hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, etc. It can used alone or in combination with Radix Rehmanniae, Fructus Gardeniae praeparatae, Nodus Nelumbinis Rhizomatis, etc.

2. Clearing away heat to induce diuresis

This drug can be used to treat pain seen in stranguria due to heat, edema, dysuria, etc. It can be used alone or in combination with Semen Plantaginis, etc. When decocted with Semen phaseoli, it can be used to treat jaundice.

3. Clearing away heat to promote the production of body fluid

This drug can be used to treat febrile diseases, thirst due to heat in the stomach, vomiting of foul food, cough due to heat in the lung, or cough with yellow sputum. Since the drug is sweat in taste and cold in nature and therefore has the effect of clearing away heat in the heart, lung and stomach, it is most suitable for those with febrile diseases accompanied by deficiency of body fluid. The drug can be used in combination with Rhizoma Phragmitis, Gypsum Fibrosum, etc. In treating measles at its initial stage with retarded eruptions, the drug can be used alone or in combination with Rhizome Phragmitis or other drugs for promoting eruption.
