White Hyacinth Bean is the dried ripe seed of Dolichos lablab L. (Fam. Leguminosae).
Nature and Affinity
It is sweet in taste and slightly warm in nature, and is distributed to the Spleen and Stomach Channels.

herb DESCRIPTION
  Flattened-ellipsoidal or flattened-ovoid, 8~13 mm long, 6~9 mm wide, about 7 mm thick. Externally pale yellowish-white or pale yellow, smooth, somewhat lustrous, with a white, prominent, eyebrow-shaped caruncle at the edge of one side. Texture hard. Testa thin and brittle, cotyledons 2, plump, yellowish-white. Odour, slight; taste, weak, bean-like on chewing.

Weakness of the spleen and stomach with loss of appetite and loose bowels; excessive leucorrhea; vomiting, diarrhea, distress in the chest and distension in the abdomen caused by summer-damp.

REFERENTIAL ADVICE
 

1. Invigorating the spleen to arrest diarrhea

In treating diarrhea or abnormal leukorrhea due to deficiency of the spleen, the drug is often used in combination with drugs for invigorating the spleen such as Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, etc. The drug can also be parched and ground into powder to treat abnormal leucorrhea with reddish discharge, 6 g of the powder being used as a dose.

2. Removing summer-heat and resolving dampness

In treating vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain caused by summer--heat and dampness, equal amount of the drug and Herba Agastachis can be ground 'into powder and 6 g of the powder is to be taken with water as a dose. In preventing and treating summer-heat diseases, the drug can be used in combination with Herba Agastachis, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis and Radix Glycyrrhizae.
